Description:
Allan Clarke here signs his autograph for a United fan outside the Bescot Stadium before the Division One clash with Walsall on 31st January, 2009.
Don Revie bought Allan Clarke from Leicester City in July 1969 for 165,000 pounds. He made 364 appearances for the Whites 4 as sub and scored 151 goals in all competitions. Clarke left for Barnsley in June 1978 for a fee of 45,000 pounds. Sniffer returned to Leeds as manager in 1980 after Adamson resigned. Clarke inherited a Leeds side that had started the season badly in the season 1980-81. Clarke's Leeds finished 9th. In an attempt to try and turn things round for the following season 1981-82 Clarke signed winger Peter Barnes from West Bromwich Albion for a club record of 930,000 pounds. As it turned out Barnes was useless and the manager was left with hardly any money to improve the side. By October Leeds managed only one win in ten games. As a last roll of the dice Clarke signed Frank Worthington to score goals and Kenny Burns to bolster the defence and midfield. It wasn't enough Leeds were relegated after 18 years in the top flight. Allan Clarke was relieved of his post before the start of the 1982-83 season. Thanks to Colin Callow for this Sniffer pic. |
