Description:
Eric Cantona here taking a breather during the Premier League match with Sheffield United that was played on October 17th, 1992 during the season of 1992-93. United won the game 3-1 with goals from Gary Speed, Chris Whyte and Lee Chapman in front of a 29,706 crowd. Cantona only made one more start in the league for the Whites after this game before he left for Manchester United. The Frenchman was signed by Howard Wilkinson during the Championship season of 1991-92 on February 4th, 1992 for £900,000, coming from the French side Nimes. Cantona fast become a favourite at Elland Road with his special goals and overhall contribution, also popping up at Wembley in the Charity Shield to score a hat-trick for the Whites in the 4-3 victory over Liverpool. A record was also cut when the United fans 'Ooh Ahh Cantona' chant was cut to vinyl with added lyrics. It all came as a shock when on the 12th November, 1992 Wilkinson decided to sell Cantona to arch rivals Manchester United for £1.2M. His form had obviously dropped and he soon found himself out of the starting eleven in 1992-93, it was a different Cantona the fans were seeing now compared to the Super Sub the crowd loved in the season before when United won the Championship. Despite his lack of form It was still hard for the fans to come to terms with Howard Wilkinson's decision of who to sell Cantona to. Cantona made 34 appearances for the Whites in all competitions, 10 of those coming on from the bench and he scored 11 goals.
Leeds United: Lukic, Newsome, Dorigo, Batty, Fairclough, Whyte, Strachan, Cantona, Chapman, McAllister, Speed. Subs: Shutt for Cantona. Thanks to William A Dobson for this great pic.
