Attack At Toon

Description: A United attack here in this shot taken from the back of the Leeds United allocation at St James' Park. A large following for United at this penultimate pre-season friendly before the start of the 2009-10 season. Various reported estimates had the United crowd for this one at anywhere between 4,000 and 5,000.

United were playing Newcastle United in a pre-season friendly on the 29th July, 2009 before the start of the 2009-10 season. The United fans filled the corner of the ground they were given for this one with many more queuing for tickets outside. The game ended in a 0-0 draw with the United keeper Shane Higgs Impressing the most. United signed Higgs from Cheltenham Town while he was out on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers on a free transfer on 3 July, 2009. Higgs kept the Newcastle attack at bay with two outstanding saves in the first half. 16,945 turned up for the friendly at St James' Park with a large number cheering for the men in yellow, old boy Alan Smith felt the brunt of that support as the United fans were always more than happy to remind him of his move to the team over The Pennines. This was the first time Smith played against The Whites since his fateful move.

Leeds United: Higgs, Crowe, Marques, Kisnorbo, Parker, Snodgrass, Delph, Howson, Johnson, Beckford, Becchio.
Subs: Ankergren for Higgs, Michalik for Kisnorbo, White for Parker, Hughes for Snodgrass, Prutton for Howson, Robinson for Johnson, Grella for Becchio.
