United fans giving their support to Lee Bowyer here after he was cleared of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and affray. Lee Bowyer was signed by Howard Wilkinson in 1996 for £2.8 million, which was then a record for a British teenager. A very popular player down at Elland Road on account of his hard work and 100% commitment. After an incident at a nightclub in Leeds, 2000, where an asian suffered injuries Bowyer along with fellow teammate Jonathan Woodgate were charged with GBH with intent and affray. The court case lasted for just under two years during which time Lee Bowyer played a major part in United's assault on Europe helping the Whites along to the semi final of the UEFA Cup in April, 2000 and the semi of the Champions League in May, 2001. Bowyer was cleared of all charges on December 14, 2001. The club fined Bowyer 4 weeks wages for a breach of the club's code of conduct but this aggrieved Bowyer, he felt it was a token fine for the sake of the media because of the sensitivity of the case. As a result the club put Bowyer on the transfer list. Later the fine issue had been resolved but Bowyer was again put on the transfer list because he refused the terms in a new five year deal offered to him by the club. Bowyer was voted Leeds player of the year by United fans for 1998–99 and 2000–01.
