Description:
Leeds United fans here building in numbers around Wembley Park Drive. Only another two hours to go before United take on Doncaster Rovers in the League One Play Off Final in May 2008. United were playing Doncaster Rovers in the First Division Play off Final at the end of season 2007-08. Gary McAllister was handed the job as manager and given a contract that ran till the end of the season after Bassett's short time in the chair came to an end. Former manager Wise and consequently Bassett as caretaker had left Leeds in a slump languishing in 8th place. The early form that broke records to get United level again after the 15 point deduction seemed to desert United after Poyet left for Tottenham Hotspur. McAllister managed to reverse the slump and get his United outfit in a Play Off position come the end of the season. In the Semi's United beat Carlisle United 3-2 on aggregate, the home goal coming from Dougie Freedman and both the away goals scored by Jonathan Howson. United's place in the final was booked with Doncaster Rovers. A lack of a cutting edge up front proved costly for Leeds in the game as United were beaten 1-0 by Doncaster. Manager McAllister admitted after the game that the best team won. 75,132 supporters turned up for the game with a massive majority being for the team in White. It was estimated and reported on Radio 5 that 55.000 Leeds fans were at Wembley for the game. With the exception of Arsenal who used Wembley for their home European games this was the largest single club support at Wembley since Liverpool played FC Bruge in the 1978 European Cup Final.
