Description:
A view here from the back of the United section at St James' Park as the Leeds United faithful applaud the teams before one of Leeds' pre-season friendlies. It was estimated that the Leeds following for this game was anywhere between 4,000 to 5,000.
United were playing Newcastle United in a pre-season friendly on the 29th July, 2009 before the start of the 2009-10 season. The United fans filled the corner of the ground they were given for this one with many more queuing for tickets outside. The game ended in a 0-0 draw with the United keeper Shane Higgs Impressing the most. United signed Higgs from Cheltenham Town while he was out on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers on a free transfer on 3 July, 2009. Higgs kept the Newcastle attack at bay with two outstanding saves in the first half. 16,945 turned up for the friendly at St James' Park with a large number cheering for the men in yellow, old boy Alan Smith felt the brunt of that support as the United fans were always more than happy to remind him of his move to the team over The Pennines. This was the first time Smith played against The Whites since his fateful move. Leeds United: Higgs, Crowe, Marques, Kisnorbo, Parker, Snodgrass, Delph, Howson, Johnson, Beckford, Becchio. Subs: Ankergren for Higgs, Michalik for Kisnorbo, White for Parker, Hughes for Snodgrass, Prutton for Howson, Robinson for Johnson, Grella for Becchio. Thanks to Colin Callow for this great pic.
