A banner displaying a message to Rio Ferdinand who left for the team over the Pennines in 2002. David O'Leary broke the British transfer record when he bought Rio Ferdinand from West ham for £18 million. At the end of the 2001-02 season Ridsdale publicly promised the Leeds United faithful and manager O'Leary that Ferdinand was not for sale. Ridsdale however broke his promise when he was forced to offload players after Leeds failed to qualify for the Champions League. On July 22nd 2002 Ferdinand was sold to Manchester United for another British record £33 million (including fees) United recieved around £30 million.
