Description: The season 1997-98 saw George Graham's first full season in charge at Elland Road and for it the Scotsman made a bagful of signings including Alf-Inge Haaland for 1.6M from Nottingham Forest, Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink from Boavista for 2M and David Hopkin from Crystal Palace for 3.25M. Also that term saw Jonathan Woodgate, goalkeeper Paul Robinson and Alan Smith push into the first team. United were knocked out of the Football League Cup at the second round stage losing to Reading at Elland Road 3-2, the Leeds goals coming from Lee Bowyer and David Wetherall. A good run in the FA Cup saw Graham's men reach the Quarter Final stage only to be knocked out by a single goal at Elland Road by Wolverhampton Wanderers. In the League and a dramatic improvement saw the team finish in 5th place and with it a UEFA Cup qualification spot. On the pitch and it was a different Leeds United, excitement had replaced the steady game with Leeds winning 17 and scoring four goals or more in no fewer than five matches. United finished the campaign on 59 points scoring 57 goals.
