Leeds United 1996-97 No.0169

Leeds United 1996-97 No.0169

Description: Leeds started the 1996-97 campaign reasonably well, picking up seven points from a possible twelve but the improvement on last season's finish wasn't to last. A fateful day on the 7th September saw the team play the current champions Manchester United at Elland Road and an injury decreased Leeds side were beaten 4-0. This didn't go down well with the Elland Road faithful, some sections had already been chanting for Wilkinson's departure since the Football League Cup final defeat and after the performance against the Salford outfit it sounded like the whole of Elland Road wanted 'Wilkinson Out'. Caspian the new board didn't waste any time and Howard Wilkinson was sacked as Leeds United manager. George Graham the ex Arsenal manager was brought in to take the club forward. Leeds went out early in the Football League Cup to Aston Villa 2-1 in the 3rd Round stage, with Lee Sharpe getting United's goal. A better showing in the FA Cup saw The Whites make the 5th Round stage after a Rod Wallace goal at Highbury knocked out Arsenal in the previous round. In the 5th Round tie against Portsmouth at Elland Road a Lee Bowyer brace wasn't enough to see Leeds through as Portsmouth ran out 3-2 winners. In the League and Leeds bettered their previous season by two places finishing in 11th spot. United drew seven of the last 10 games and brought their season to a close on 46 points scoring only 28 goals, three goals behind bottom placed Nottingham Forest.
