Leeds United 1991-92 No.0156

Submitted: 03/22/11 (Edited 03/22/11)
Description: The start of the 1991-92 season saw manager Wilkinson make more invaluable purchases to add to his squad. Tony Dorigo joined from Chelsea for 1.3M, Rod Wallace came from Southampton for 1.6M and David Wetherall from Sheffield Wednesday came for another bargain at 125,000. Irishman Gary Kelly also made his debut that term. United made the 5th round of the Football League Cup beating Everton at Goodison Park on the way by 4-1, with goals from Gary Speed, Lee Chapman, and Rod Wallace getting two. Eventually Leeds were beaten by Manchester United 3-1. It was Manchester United who also put Leeds out of the FA Cup at the first stage by a single goal at Elland Road. In the League and Leeds United went the first ten games without a loss. Losing their eleventh game by a single goal away to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. That was one of only four losses all season for Leeds United as Wilkinson's men went on to take the Championship in only their second season back up. Arguing for most of the season in a two horse race with Manchester United for the top domestic prize it would be Leeds United who would avenge their cup exits and take the First Division Championship back to Elland Road. A magnificent season for Leeds winning the third Top Tier Championship in their history. In only his third full season in charge at Elland Road Wilkinson had achieved a minor miracle. United won 22 games, scored 74 goals and only lost four all season. Champions.
