Leeds United 1985-86 No.0142

Submitted: 03/18/11 (Edited 03/18/11)
Description: To the dismay of the Leeds fans and indeed to players and certain members of the board at Elland Road Eddie Gray was sacked just three months into the season 1985-86. Leeds had had a poor start winning just once in their opening six games with a 6-2 defeat at the hands of Stoke City being one of the lowlights. Gray did manage to turn it round, the next eight games and United progressed with only one defeat, this run included a first stage win in the Football League Cup against Walsall where Leeds won 3-0, this win came in the second leg away at Walsall after a 0-0 draw at Elland Road. The Leeds board had lost faith though and despite the turnaround they sacked Eddie Gray and his assistant Jimmy Lumsden. Angry demonstrations by fans followed the dismissal of Eddie Gray. Certain board members didn't agree with it, one even resigned and some fans called for the head of Chairman Leslie Silver. Silver soon found the answer to pacify the fans and get them back on side, with the appointment of Billy Bremner as manager. The Leeds United hero was the third Revie old boy in succession to be appointed, he had been managing at Doncaster Rover's before the approach from Leeds. Bremner bought midfieder Ian Snodin that season, who he knew from Doncaster but significant departures included Sellars and Irwin. The promising side Gray had buit was being dismantled and sold for far less than it was worth. Bremner failed to turn the season round for The Whites, United went out at the 3rd round stage in the FA Cup 1-0 against Peterborough United, in the Football League Cup United were beaten by Aston Villa 3-0 at Elland Road and in the League with hit and miss patches of form Leeds finished a lowly 14th.

Back Row: Peter Swan, Ian Baird, Andy Linighan, Neil Aspin, Stephen O’Shaughnessy, Roger Eli, Andy Ritchie, Martin Dickinson.
Middle Row: Geoff Ladley (Physio), David Bentley (Assistant Manager), Nigel Thompson, Gary Hamson, Mervyn Day, Trevor Swinburne, Dennis Irwin, David Blakey (Chief Scout), Billy Bremner (Manager), Peter Gunby (Coach).
Front Row: Peter Lorimer, John Sheridan, George McCluskey, Scott Sellars, Ian Snodin, Lyndon Simmonds, Terry Phelan, John Stiles.

Leeds finished in 14th position in the league and early exits again in the cup proved a bumpy arrival for Bremner.
