Description:
United were under financial difficulties before the 1957-58 season, they had never been a wealthy club and the fire which destroyed the West Stand in 1956 brought the situation from poor to desperate. A strapped for cash United needed the money to build a new stand which was essential for the clubs future financial stability. The Leeds City Council helped towards some of the cost but it wasn't enough and United relented to offers from Europe for the signature of John Charles. John Charles was sold to Juventus on the 1st May, 1957 for a world record fee of 65,000.
This was a great loss for manager Raich Carter and Leeds United. Hugh Baird was brought in as a replacement for Charles and scored 20 goals but United's form had been lacking all season and Carter's men finished in 17th position just five points off relegation. As a result of United's turn in fortune the contract of Raich Carter was not renewed. This was just two season's after he got United promoted, Carter was upset by the decision and blamed the lack of funds on United's poor showing. Back Row: Jimmy Dunn, Jack Charlton, Royden Wood, Hugh Baird, Archie Gibson, Grenville Hair. Front Row: Chris Crowe, George O'Brien, Eric Kerfoot, George Meek, Jackie Overfield.
