Leeds United 1944-45 No.0056

Leeds United 1944-45 No.0056

Description: Football League was suspended with the outbreak of WWII during the 1939-40 season and it couldn't have come at a worse time for Billy Hampson and his young Leeds United side who were just beginning to gel. The Football Association did allow football to continue during the war on a non professional level but there was restrictions on the players wages and games could only go ahead with the permission of the local constabulary. Many clubs closed down for the war but United continued with the assistance of guest players. It was hard for any club who played through the war to rely on players because of conscription and players from other clubs often guested for teams when needed.
In the 1944-45 season United played in the Football League Northern Section and in the team pictured guest players from Barnsley, Chelsea, Sunderland and Celtic are featured. United finished in 32nd place out of a final table made up of 60 teams.

Back Row: Bob Roxburgh (Trainer), Frank Butterworth, Bob Shotton (Barnsley), Jim Twomey, Jack Milburn, Robson Campbell (Charlton Athletic), Sam Weaver (Chelsea).
Front Row: Eddie Burbanks (Sunderland), Cyril Coyne, Gerry Henry, Tom Hindle, John Paton(Celtic).

Thanks to: Tony Hill for putting the names and teams to the faces.
