Warm Up For The Eight

Warm Up For The Eight

Description: The United squad warm up here on the Elland Road pitch before their League One game with Stockport County on the 5th September, 2009.

A win against Stockport County would see Simon Grayson's Leeds United go into the records books by winning eight consecutive games at the start of the season. United equalled the previous records set by Don Revie's men in the season 1973-74 after they beat Colchester United 2-1 at the Weston Homes Community Stadium. Manager Simon Grayson was forced into making three changes before the game against Stockport, leading goalscorer Jermaine Beckford was out with an hamstring injury while Rui Marques and Patrick Kisnorbo were both out on International duty. Leigh Bromby making his debut for the Whites, Lubo Michalik and Mike Grella were brought in as replacements. By a strange twist of fate the man refereeing the match was Danny McDermid the same ref who almost certainly denied Dennis Wise's Leeds United the same record in season 2007-08 after some appalling decisions cost Leeds the three points and ultimately the record in their 1-1 draw with Gillingham on September 29th, 2007. McDermid or not it was United who started the game the most assertive and after only seven minutes Mike Grella scored his first goal for the club after some good interplay with Bradley Johnson. The visitors came back with several efforts on goal but it was United who struck the net again, this time Lubo Michalik slotting home after the keeper palmed out a Robert Snodgrass free-kick on 37 minutes. Both teams had chances in the early stages of the second half before United were awarded a penalty. A Colchester defender was adjudged to have handled the ball but Leeds were denied a third after the Hatters keeper saved Robert Snodgrass's attempt from the spot. The save gave Stockport hope and Shane Higgs was forced to make several good saves but it mattered little as United carried the two goal advantage to the final whistle and with it took the record of 8 consecutive wins. The result was also the 14th successive league win on home soil for Leeds United which bettered the previous records set by the Don Revie sides of 1969 and 1974. 22,870 cheered on the Whites at Elland Road for the momentus occasion.

Leeds United: Higgs, Crowe, Michalik, Bromby, Doyle, Howson, Johnson, Hughes, Becchio, Grella, Snodgrass.
Subs: Kilkenny for Doyle, Robinson for Bromby, Showunmi for Grella.

Thanks to Harvey Mayhew for this great pic.
