The Rain Game

The Rain Game

Submitted: 10/13/09 (Edited 10/13/09)
Description: A great shot here of the sheeting rain at Elland Road that was in attendance for the Football Trophy clash played on the 6th October, 2009. The pic taken from the Kop shows the North Corner of the John Charles Stand.

United were playing Darlington in the Second Round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy (The Football League Trophy) at Elland Road. Manager Simon Grayson made many changes for the game with the North East outfit, Andy Robinson, Aidy White, David Prutton, Tresor Kandol and Mike Grella all started for United after a number of players were out with either injuries or on international duty. Bottom of the Football League Darlington started the game brightly enough and were the first side to have a chance on goal with the shot just going wide but the Whites responded quickly with Tresor Kandol having four seperate attempts on goal in the first fifteen minutes, the latter from his head was pushed onto the bar by the Darlington keeper. After that initial attempt on goal by the visitors it was pretty much one way traffic with United dominating play and easily dealing with anything Darlington had to offer. After United came close again with efforts from Mike Grella and Andy Robinson it seemed only a matter of time and on 24 minutes Leeds broke the deadlock after an Andy Robinson free-kick was deflected into the Darlington net. Four minutes later United made it two with Tresor Kandol smashing home a Neil Kilkenny pass. It looked like plain sailing for Leeds but against the run of play the visitors pulled one back just before the half time whistle. United kept up the momentum in the second half, dominating play and comfortably dealing with anything Darlington had to offer. Darlington to their credit never gave up and did create several chances of their own but they never really threatened United or the lead. With 6 minutes remaining of normal time United substitute Davide Somma who was making his debut for the Whites pulled up with a suspected hamstring injury which had United play the final few minutes out with 10 men. This forced Leeds to sit on the advantage and the game looked to be coasting to a sober end but in the final minute of stoppage time there was just enough time left for a little excitement after the Darlington goalkeeper was sent off with a straight red after he barged into Enoch Showunmi outside the box who was chasing down a long ball. The whistle soon sounded after and Leeds had booked their place into the Northern Section of the Quarter Final's. A decent crowd of 8,429 turned up for the FLT affair with the vast majority going home the happier.

Leeds United: Ankergren, Naylor, Michalik, Bromby, White, Prutton, Kilkenny, Robinson, Hughes, Grella, Kandol.
Subs: Showunmi for Kandol, Somma for Grella, Johnson for Hughes.

Thanks to Mattie for this great pic.
