United were playing Exeter City at Elland Road on the opening game of the 2009-10 season. Leeds fielded four players making their debut in this one Shane Higgs the goalkeeper who impressed in pre-season from Cheltenham Town, Jason Crowe the defender who came from Northampton Town, Michael Doyle a midfielder from Coventry City and Patrick Kisnorbo a defender who made the move from Leicester City. It was United's Jermaine Beckford who opened the scoring on 13 minutes putting United deservedly in the lead. After the break and Exeter lost a man to a red card but 10 men Exeter levelled the scoring on 73 minutes. This prompted United to put the pressure on which eventually earned United another goal on 89 minutes. Jermaine Beckford netting again for The Whites, this time finding the back of the net with his head. United won the game 2-1 in front of the biggest opening crowd of the season for five years at Elland Road with 27,681 of the faithful turning up for this one, the best crowd since 2004-05 when 30,459 saw the season opener with Derby County. The win also meant United hadn't been beaten in a season opener for 20 season's, the last time Leeds lost in the first game was away in the 5-2 defeat against Newcastle at the start of season 1989-90.
