Leeds United 1986-87 No.0144
A fighting performance from United brought a vast improvement in fairings for Billy Bremner's Leeds United side in the season of 1986-87. In the FA Cup and Leeds made it all the way to the Semi Final beating First Division Queens Park Rangers on the way in a thrilling 5th Round tie at Elland Road 2-1, with Ian Baird and Brendan Ormsby scoring for Leeds. United were beaten in the Semi 3-2 after extra time by Coventry City, the eventual winners of the Cup, at Hillsborough, David Rennie and Keith Edwards scoring the goals for Bremner's side. United went out in the first stage of the Football League Cup but in the League The Whites made it all the way to the Play Off Final, finishing the campaign in 4th place on 68 points. United beat Oldham Athletic over two legs in the Play Off Semi. Two goals, one in each leg from Keith Edwards sealed a place for Leeds in the final. United met Charlton Athletic in the final where Leeds lost the away leg 1-0 but returned the favour at Elland Road with a goal from Brendan Ormsby which set up a replay at Birmingham's St. Andrews ground. The game at St. Andrews went to extra time after staying goalless for 90 minutes. In the first period of extra time and John Sheridan scores a wonderful free-kick for Leeds sending the travelling faithful into raptures. The celebrations of the Leeds fans didn't last long though as Charlton scored twice in the last ten minutes of the second period, goals which ended Leeds' dream of a return to top flight football. A relatively encouraging season for Leeds United but a case of so near so far as United would have to do it all over again.

From The Gelderd End
Looking down at the action on the Elland Road pitch from the Kop at Elland Road. The shot coming from the Football League Championship game against Leicester City at Elland Road on the 27th November, 2012.

The Spion Kop at Elland Road was built in the 1920's and attained its name from a hill in South Africa. During the Boer War 322 British soldiers lost their lives on the hill and many football teams named their stands after Spion Kop hill in tribute to the fallen men. The original Kop was all terracing and built on an embankment, at this time the Kop had no roof. In April 1968 the old Spion Kop terracing was stripped away in no less than six weeks and in its place the new Kop was built complete with a roof and new name. The Elland Road Kop was now known as the Gelderd End. The new stand cost 250,000 to build. In 1994 as a result of the recommendations in the Taylor Report which was published in 1990 the Gelderd End became all seater. 7,000 seats were added to the terrace reducing the stands capacity by just under 3,000. The Gelderd End was the final stand at the Elland Road stadium to acquire seats. The new look Kop was officially opened in October by the President of the club, Lord Harewood and Mrs E Revie the late Don Revie's widow. The Gelderd End was renamed after the great manager himself and the stand is now officially known as the Revie Stand.

A different version of Square Smiles here without the median in between the core design. This surface pattern was originally designed as a stealth project meaning this effort could quite easily could be found in the homes of non Leeds United fans. Armchair Scum fans even, cheering for their Zeroes from the comfort of a Leeds United upholstered chair, or drinking their tea from a Leeds United cup.

It'll Grow Back
The Elland Road pitch here undergoing its annual makeover. Every year the turf is taken up and re-laid during the close season. Work started on the hallowed turf in mid March with groundsmen working round the clock to ensure the pitch will be ready for the new season. Norman Southernwood head groundsman told the official site, "After the last game of the season we had about a fortnight where there were several activities on the pitch, such as seven-a-side games. "Then last Thursday the top came off, on Friday it was power harrowed before we tried to get it levelled on Saturday. Since the start of the week we've been working on the edges of the pitch, as you can't work on the entire pitch with machinery. "Everything's looking alright at the moment. The weather's just gone in our favour now because the sun's come out and that warms up the ground and helps to kick on the seed. Usually within ten days after re-seeding everything's looking a bit greener."
