Leeds United 1990-91 No.0154
What a comeback, the first season back in the top flight for Howard Wilkinson's men was more than the most optimistic Leeds fan could have hoped for. The season 1990-91 saw Leeds United reach the Zenith Data Systems Northern Final, losing in a two legged game against Everton. Drawing the first leg at Elland Road 3-3 where Lee Chapman netted twice and Mel Sterland bagged the other. In the away leg though Leeds lost the game 3-1 with Sterland scoring again. In the Football League Cup and Leeds battled all the way to the Semi Final. United beat Aston Villa on the way 4-1 at Elland Road in the 5th Round with goals from Welshman Gary Speed, Lee Chapman scoring twice and Gary McAllister who had signed from Leicester for 1M. Goalkeeper John Lukic made a return that season also for the same price tag. Unfortunately Leeds lost the Semi against Manchester United in another close fought two legged affair. Leeds went out at the first stage to Arsenal in the FA Cup after three replays. In the League and Leeds finished a lofty fourth position, winning 19 games and scoring 65 goals. In their first season back Leeds made the fourth placed spot in January and stayed in that position all season. A very worthy return for Leeds United back in the Top Flight, Wilko had worked his magic and United fans were looking forward.

Back Row: Chris O'Donnell, Chris Kamara, Vinnie Jones, John Pearson, Lee Chapman, John McClelland, Peter Haddock, Andy Williams.
Middle Row: Alan Sutton (Physio), Gary McAllister, Simon Grayson, Dylan Kerr, John Lukic, Mervyn Day, Chris Whyte, Mike Whitlow, Mel Sterland, Mick Hennigan (Coach).
Front Row: Bobby Davison, Chris Fairclough, Gary Speed, Glynn Snodin, Howard Wilkinson (Manager), Gordon Strachan, Jim Beglin, Imre Varadi, David Batty.
