Leeds United 2000-01 No.0179
Ten days before the start of the season 2000-01 O'Leary's Leeds team played TSV 1860 Munich at Elland Road in the 1st Leg of the 3rd Qualifying Round of the Champion's League. United won the game 2-1 with goals from Ian Harte and Alan Smith. Two weeks later The Whites finished the job and qualified proper for the competition after Leeds won the away leg 1-0 with another goal from Alan Smith. Manager O'Leary spent big for the upcoming season bringing in Australian Mark Viduka from Celtic for 6M, French Midfielder Olivier Dacourt was signed from Lens for 7.2M breaking the transfer record at Elland Road and a month into the season O'Leary swooped for Dominic Matteo coming from Liverpool for 4.75M. In the Football League Cup and Leeds were knocked out at the first stage by Tranmere Rovers 3-2 after extra time at Prenton Park. Darren Huckerby netted both the goals for Leeds. In the FA Cup and Leeds didn't fair much better, after beating Barnsley at Elland Road in the 3rd Round 1-0 with a Mark Viduka goal they were knocked out at the 4th Round stage by Liverpool 2-0 again at Elland Road. A different story in the Champions League for The Whites saw O'Leary's unfancied side reach the Semi Final stage with some memorable performances in Europe. United eventually met Spanish side Valencia in the Semi Final where their European adventure ended. After a 0-0 draw at Elland Road The Whites lost the away leg 3-0. In the League and O'Leary's young side finished 4th in the Premiership. A decent finish for United but 4th position meant no Champions League for the following season. This was significantly a crucial loss of revenue for a Leeds team that had spent big. They did however qualify for the UEFA Cup, topping off one of the most exciting seasons since the 1992 Championship win. United won 20 games, scored 64 goals and finished on 68 points.

Lowfields Snow
A snow covered Lowfields here giving the old stand a quaint Christmas Card affect. This shot taken from the East of the stadium in 1978.

The Lowfields Stand was erected in the 1920's and the lower tier terracing ran the entire length of the East side of Elland Road. The seated upper tier with roof stretched over half the distance of the terracing. In 1992 the Lowfields Stand was demolished to make way for the new all seater East Stand.

Tall Diamonds
When in place at Elland Road these were the tallest floodlights in Europe. Constructed in 1974 at a whopping 260 feet tall, initially three floodlights were erected. Two at either side of the Kop and the other in the South West corner. The other was put up in the South East corner adjacent to the old Lowfields four years later. The diamond shaped lights could have been seen for miles around and each light contained 55 lamps.

Besiktas Blue Line
138 admirable Leeds fans make the trip to the Besiktas Inonu Stadium, Istanbul, Turkey, with over two policemen for every one of them. A high police presence and limited ticket allocation for this game in Istanbul because of the two Leeds United fans that were murdered in the same city the season before. The Champions League 1st stage match ended in a 0-0 draw which was good enough for United to progress to the next stage. 34,485 supporters attended the game.

Leeds United: Robinson, Kelly, Woodgate, Mills, Harte, Bakke, Bowyer, Burns, Matteo; Bridges (Huckerby, then McPhail), Viduka. Unused Subs: Jones, Hay, Evans, Hackworth, Robinson.

Leeds United 1999-00 No.0176
The season 1999-00 was the first full season in charge for manager David O'Leary and for the new campaign the Irishman made numerous signings. Danny Mills came from Charlton for 4.37M million, Eirik Bakke penned for 1M coming from Norwegian outfit Sogndal and Michael Bridges came from Sunderland for 4.5M which underlined the talent O'Leary was bringing to the club. Not much progress in the Football League Cup saw United knocked out in the 4th Round by Leicester City at Filbert Street after a penalty shoot out. Leeds went a round further in the FA Cup making the 5th Round only to be knocked out by Aston Villa 3-2 at Villa Park with Ian Harte and Eirik Bakke netting for Leeds. In the UEFA Cup and Leeds United made it all the way to the Semi Final where they met Turkish side Galatasary, Leeds lost the game over two legs, The Whites went down 2-0 in Istanbul and drew the game at Elland Road 2-2 with both the Leeds goals coming from Eirik Bakke. In the League and Leeds finished in their highest spot since they won the League in 1991-92 under Howard Wilkinson. O'Leary's young team finished in third spot and with it a place in the Champion's League. United won 28 games and scored 58 goals in the process.

This season however will always be remembered for the wrong reasons. O'Leary's achievements with his young side will always be in the shadow of two incidents that are now unfortunately cemented in the history of Leeds United. The first involved the two United players Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate. While out drinking at the Majestyk night club in Leeds January, 2000 they got themselves involved in an incident which saw a man suffer injuries that resulted in an eight day stay in hospital. What made this matter worse and prompted the papers to have a field day was the man receiving the treatment was Asian. Bowyer and Woodgate were charged with causing grievous bodily harm in an allegedly racially motivated attack. The case lasted for nearly two years and from the outset the judge made it very clear that the incident was not racially motivated. This did not stop the newspapers at large heaving an all out assault on Leeds United and it didn't stop opposing fans from chanting obscene, expletives at every following game without any recourse from the authorities. It could however have stopped Leeds United from having an even more memorable time in the League. Playing under such appalling and ludicrous conditions, a result of the national newspapers assaults, must have had a significant affect on the team.

The other regrettable and devastating incident involved two Leeds United supporters. Leeds United faced the Turkish side Galatasary in the Semi Final of the UEFA Cup. The night before the game on the 5th April, 2000 two Leeds United fans Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight were murdered by a group of Galatasary supporters. Stabbed to death because allegedly they had made insults towards sections of the Istanbul public. This allegation didn't have one witness who could put Kevin or Chris at the scene of any incident. It goes without saying that if the absurd and incompetent officials within UEFA had have cancelled the following days game Leeds might have done better on the park. The game went ahead in an extremely hostile environment with little care from the Turkish police. Hateful chanting went on over the Leeds team who lost the game 2-0. As if that wasn't enough the referee was distinctly biased in the Turkish sides favour. We'll never know how badly this affected Leeds United, it was heartbreaking for everybody involved with the club. Peter Ridsdale the Leeds chairman throughout the duration of this hard time was amazing, bringing many favourable and respectful comments from people outside of the club. The baleful deeds of the Galatasary supporting scum that night will never be absolved by Leeds fans and the memory of Chris and Kevin will always be in our hearts.

Inside ER - The Cheese Wedge
The South East Corner at Elland Road commonly known as the Cheese Wedge on account of its yellow seats was constructed in September 1991 linking the Lowfields and the South Stand together. This new stand gave the away supporters at Elland Road a full corner stand to themselves, previously away supporters were housed in the paddocks at the south of the Lowfields terracing. The South East corner was initially used as the family stand until the membership outgrew the capacity of 1,710. The family membership were then moved to the bottom tier of the East Stand.

Turf It In
The Elland Road pitch here undergoing its annual makeover. Every year the turf is taken up and re-laid during the close season. Work started on the hallowed turf in mid March with groundsmen working round the clock to ensure the pitch will be ready for the new season. Norman Southernwood head groundsman told the official site, "After the last game of the season we had about a fortnight where there were several activities on the pitch, such as seven-a-side games. "Then last Thursday the top came off, on Friday it was power harrowed before we tried to get it levelled on Saturday. Since the start of the week we've been working on the edges of the pitch, as you can't work on the entire pitch with machinery. "Everything's looking alright at the moment. The weather's just gone in our favour now because the sun's come out and that warms up the ground and helps to kick on the seed. Usually within ten days after re-seeding everything's looking a bit greener."

Leeds United 1992-93 No.0159
Before the start of the 1992-93 campaign Leeds took on Liverpool in the Charity Shield for the second time in their history. This time round it would be victory for the men in white, as United won the shield 4-3, with Eric Cantona bagging a hat trick for Leeds and Tony Dorigo scoring the other. Leeds had an early exit in the FA Cup with Arsenal winning a replay in the 4th Round at Elland Road after extra time and Leeds also went out early in the Football League Cup after they lost 2-1 away at Watford in the 3rd Round. In the League and Leeds just couldn't find their feet. With somewhat Jekyll and Hyde like performances, losing 4-1 away to Middlesborough in late August followed three days later with a 5-0 win at home against Tottenham Hotspur, saw them finish in a lowly 17th spot. Starting games as champions rather than underdogs didn't suit the United attitude and with the rest of the Division having a point to prove Leeds didn't have the answer. Leeds amazingly went all season without an away win. In the European Cup and Leeds disappointingly exited early in a two legged affair against Scottish Champions Rangers in Round 2. The previous round however saw one of the most memorable games ever at Elland Road. The German Champions Stuttgart brought a 3-0 advantage to Elland Road in the First Round, nobody gave Leeds a hope and they were underdogs once again. In the game at Elland Road and Leeds were unstoppable with a single-minded game plan of attack winning the game 4-1. With goals from Speed, Cantona, Chapman and Gary McAllister netting from the penalty spot. Stuttgart should have gone through on the away goal rule but amazingly UEFA ordered the game to be replayed because Stuttgart had fielded too many foreign players. At the neutral Nou Camp and Leeds won the replay 2-1 with goals from Strachan and Shutt.

Back Row: Chris Whyte, Gary McAllister, John Lukic, Lee Chapman, Mervyn Day, Jon Newsome, David Wetherall.
Middle Row: Alan Sutton (Physio),Mel Sterland, Steve Hodge, David Rocastle, Chris Fairclough, Carl Shutt, Eric Cantona, Mick Hennigan (Coach).
Front Row: Scott Sellars, Gary Speed, Tony Dorigo, Howard Wilkinson (Manager), Gordon Strachan, David Batty, Rod Wallace.

Shane And Casper
Shane Higgs and Casper Ankergren here during their pre-match warm up at the Bescot Stadium on the 18th August, 2009 before United's League One clash with Walsall.

Ankergren was signed on loan by Dennis Wise on 31st January, 2009 from Brondby IF of Denmark. After establishing himself in the side making some match winning saves in the second half of the 2006-07 season he soon won the Elland Road faithful over and his loan deal was made permanent on 6th August, 2007 for an undisclosed fee signing on for a year. United's first choice keeper up until the start of the 2009-10 season when Ankergren lost his number one spot to Shane Higgs.

Shane Higgs was signed by Simon Grayson on the 3rd July, 2009. Coming to Leeds from Cheltenham Town while on loan at Wolverhampton Wanderers Higgs signed a one year deal. Higgs put in some excellent performance during the 2009-10 pre-season friendlies which earned him the Number One jersey at Elland Road taking over from Casper Ankergren as the first choice keeper.

United were looking for their third successive league win in the game against Walsall and manager Simon Grayson chose the same side that beat Wycombe Wanderers just three days earlier. United looked the most assured outifit in the first 45 minutes and were the dominant side as Andrew Hughes, Jonathan Howson and Jermaine Beckford all added goal attempts to their tally in the first half. Beckford again had attempts on goal in the third quarter of the game testing the Walsall keeper several times. Grayson made a couple of changes on the 72nd minute bringing on Andrew Robinson and Neil Kilkenny but it was Walsall who looked the different side and their improved play brought them a penalty on the 80th minute when it was harshly decided Rui Marques brought down a Walsall player in the Leeds area. Walsall scored from the spot but United fought back almost immediately pushing up in numbers and on the 83rd minuted Leeds equalised as Bradley Johnson headed home his first goal of the season. The goal spurred Leeds on more and within four minutes United had taken a deserved lead as Rui Marques delivered a ball upfield from the defensive lines which Beckford gladly took on and the striker hammered home his third goal of the season. United kept the lead until the final whistle blew sending around half of the Bank's into raptures, 8.483 watched the game and somewhere in the region of 4,000 Leeds fans travelled from up and down the country to the West Midlands to support their team in this one.

Leeds United: Higgs, Crowe Kisnorbo, Marques, Doyle, Howson, Johnson, Hughes, Beckford, Becchio, Snodgrass.
Subs: Kilkenny for Doyle, Robinson for Hughes, Prutton for Snodgrass.

We're Leeds United
A Leeds United shirt here left by the owner with message at the feet of the Billy bremner Statute in support of the Flower Protest 2007. The words on the shirt read "We're Leeds United, We'll Never Be Defeated" MOT, WACCOE.

The Flower protest was created against a backdrop of one of the darkest periods in Leeds United's history. A time when the club was very close to going completely out of business and thus ending any representation for the City of Leeds in the Football League. It was an anonymous Leeds United fan who belonged to the Ultra's, a Leeds United supporters group, that came up with the idea. The Flower Protest was a concerted effort by the United faithful organised through the various Leeds United forum's on the internet and in particular WACCOE. It had the aim of showing love and support through the club's darkest hour with a display of flowers and club colours that should be laid around the Billy statue. The first shirt and flowers were laid on the 20th July by WACCOE user Bilks and the display soon gathered momentum as the word spread round. Fans of other teams showed their support and some offered their own colours at the Bremner statute, the media were also soon to pick up on the protest with local and national news teams reporting on the story.

Hello Hell We Are Leeds
The defiant and comedic greeting the Leeds fans carried with them to the UEFA Cup Semi Final with Galatasary in Istanbul. The fans of Galatasary are known to greet the away fans with messages of 'Welcome To Hell' at the airport and in the ground, this was the Leeds United fans response. The game against Galatasary was played within 24 hours of the murders of two Leeds United fans. On the 5th April, 2000, Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight were murdered by cowardly Galatasary supporting scum. Stabbed to death, because allegedly they had made insults, towards sections of the Istanbul public. An allegation that didn't have one witness who could put Kevin or Chris at the scene of any incident. RIP Kevin and Chris.
