Ten For Ken Flyer
Leeds fans demand transparency

Leeds, April 29, 2010: Leeds United fans are striking a blow to remove the cloak of secrecy that shrouds the League One club.

A group of fans, informally called the Campaign for Change, have identified ten key areas of concern along with a list of relevant questions about the direction the club is taking and are demanding answers from current chairman Ken Bates.

The issues of concern can be seen at the website www.tenforken.com and on Saturday, April 24, 8,000 leaflets with a condensed set of ten questions and 9,000 stickers were distributed among fans before the club’s 4-1 victory over MK Dons.

The move came on the back of an open Lorimer's Bar forum with fans at Elland Road last Tuesday, where Ken Bates and his self-awarded reputation for no-nonsense straight-talking, looked a little shaky under direct questioning.

Replying to fans' concerns on a wide range of subjects, the Monaco-based tax exile surprised some in the audience when he:

• Confirmed that he didn't have a clue who owned the club, saying it was 'tough' if disgruntled fans felt they had nowhere to take their concerns.
• Said that in the current climate no one would lend money to football clubs, so his plans for a ‘Leeds Village’ hotel and shopping project are stalled.
• Refused to take any responsibility for the club’s failure to re-purchase the
Thorp Arch training complex (sold by the previous regime to raise funds) or the fact that, five years on, neither of his stated twin aims of ownership of Elland Road and Thorp Arch have been achieved.
• Alleged that Leeds had, as yet, received no money at all from Aston Villa for the summer sale of Fabian Delph, almost a year after the player was sold.

Questions at the meeting reflected growing discontent with a regime which has seen Leeds United at its lowest ever league position, with many questions remaining unanswered about the identity of the club’s owners, planning projects, court costs for libel cases, the status of the club’s Yorkshire Radio station, investment, pricing and priorities.

A spokesperson for the fan campaign said: “For the last ten years Leeds United fans have been kept in the dark by a succession of chairmen and owners about the state of the club. We demand greater transparency on key issues such as how the club is run and where our financial support goes – and that demand will extend not only to Ken Bates’s tenure but also to subsequent owners.”

Down For The Friendly
A great shot here from the East Stand at Elland Road looking at the Gelderd End, coming from the final pre-season friendly of the 2013-14 season. The club only opened the East Stand and Gelderd End for the game against the Germans. The shot coming from the 2013-14 pre-season friendly against FC Nurnberg at Elland Road on the 27th July, 2013.

The Spion Kop at Elland Road was built in the 1920's and attained its name from a hill in South Africa. During the Boer War 322 British soldiers lost their lives on the hill and many football teams named their stands after Spion Kop hill in tribute to the fallen men. The original Kop was all terracing and built on an embankment, at this time the Kop had no roof. In April 1968 the old Spion Kop terracing was stripped away in no less than six weeks and in its place the new Kop was built complete with a roof and new name. The Elland Road Kop was now known as the Gelderd End. The new stand cost £250,000 to build. In 1994 as a result of the recommendations in the Taylor Report which was published in 1990 the Gelderd End became all seater. 7,000 seats were added to the terrace reducing the stands capacity by just under 3,000. The Gelderd End was the final stand at the Elland Road stadium to acquire seats. The new look Kop was officially opened in October by the President of the club, Lord Harewood and Mrs E Revie the late Don Revie's widow. The Gelderd End was renamed after the great manager himself and the stand is now officially known as the Revie Stand.

Leeds United: Kenny, Peltier, Lees, Pearce, Warnock, Green, Murphy, McCormack, White, Varney, Poleon.
Subs: Drury for Warnock, Tonge for Green, Hunt for Varney, Smith for Poleon.

Third For Varney
Luke Varney United's Midfielder fires home from the spot here for United in front of the South Stand at Broadhall. This was United's third goal of the game and won Luke Varney the match ball as he netted his hat-trick at the game in Hertfordshire. The shot coming from the 2013-14 pre season friendly game against Stevenage at Broadhall Way on the 23rd July, 2013. Luke started the game for Leeds and scored a hat-trick but was replaced on 81 minutes by Noel Hunt.

The United manager finally brought Luke Varney to Elland Road on the 23rd July, 2012 after weeks of speculation. The English Midfielder costing 300k was one of four new Summer signings from troubled League One outfit Portsmouth FC. Always a favourite of the United Boss Warnock the manager said: "I have been after Luke for about seven years now on and off. I have spoken to him a number of times at different clubs but have never quite managed to sign him. He is an unpredictable type of player and the fans like him and I think there are goals in him. I will be setting him a target; I would like to think he can score between 8 and 10 goals next season." Luke made his debut for the Whites and scored his first goal for the club in the Football League Cup game Shrewsbury Town on the 11th August, 2012.

Leeds United: Kenny, Thompson, Lees, Pugh, Drury, Green, Brown, Norris, White, Varney, Poleon.

Hunt And Pearce
The United Defender Jason Pearce and the Irish International Noel Hunt on the Elland Road pitch here pictured just before the referee calls the teams for the kick off. The shot coming from the Football League Championship game against Brighton and Hove Albion at Elland Road on the 3rd August, 2013. Pearce played the full game for Leeds against the Seagulls while Hunt was replaced on 67 minutes by Dominic Poleon.

The Leeds manager Neil Warnock signed Jason Pearce on the 4th May, 2012. Jason was the first Summer signing for the United Boss and came to Elland Road for a reported cut price fee of 500k. Warnock had previously tried to sign Pearce while he was manager at Queens Park Rangers and again for United towards the end of the 2011-12 season. The English Defender is one of four new Summer signings from troubled League One outfit Portsmouth FC. Jason made his debut for The Whites in the Football League Cup game against Shrewsbury Town on the 11th August, 2012. After signing the player told the official site: "Leeds showed an interest a few weeks ago and as soon as I knew of that I wanted to get it done... I'm glad it's done now. The gaffer showed me around, and you can see what a massive club this is with great facilities, and you can't turn it down.

The Leeds United manager Brian McDermott signed Irish International Forward Noel Hunt on the 3rd July, 2013. Coming from Reading on a free transfer Hunt signed for The Whites on a two year contract. This is the second time Hunt has played under McDermott, the two were together at Reading where he scored 39 goals in 162 appearances for the Berkshire outfit. Hunt made his debut for The Whites in the first game of the 2013-14 season at Elland Road against Brighton and Hove Albion on the 3rd August, 2013. Hunt revealed after the signing that the clubs reputation and fans were major reasons he signed for The Whites as well as joining up with his former boss. McDermott told the official site: "Noel will bring an awful lot to our squad, on and off the pitch... He's an infectious character and I'm sure he will engage Leeds fans with his desire, determination and never say die attitude."
