Out Of Pitch
The Elland Road pitch here undergoing its annual makeover. Every year the turf is taken up and re-laid during the close season. Work started on the hallowed turf in mid March with groundsmen working round the clock to ensure the pitch will be ready for the new season. Norman Southernwood head groundsman told the official site, "After the last game of the season we had about a fortnight where there were several activities on the pitch, such as seven-a-side games. "Then last Thursday the top came off, on Friday it was power harrowed before we tried to get it levelled on Saturday. Since the start of the week we've been working on the edges of the pitch, as you can't work on the entire pitch with machinery. "Everything's looking alright at the moment. The weather's just gone in our favour now because the sun's come out and that warms up the ground and helps to kick on the seed. Usually within ten days after re-seeding everything's looking a bit greener."

Thanks to: Mark for this great pic.

Leeds United 1993-94 No. 0161
Early exits again for Wilkinson's Leeds United in the season of 1993-94. In the Football League Cup and United were knocked out at the Second Round stage by Sunderland over two legs. United went down 2-1 in both legs, in the first leg at Roker Park Gary Speed netted the Leeds goal and for the second leg at Elland Road it was Noel Whelan that delivered the single goal for The Whites. In the 3rd Round of the FA Cup United beat Crewe Alexandra 3-1 at Elland Road, a goal from Brian Deane and two from Jamie Forrester gave United a fourth Round ticket but progression was soon halted, Leeds lost the next tie after a replay against Oxford United. Leeds drew the game at the Manor Ground 2-2, a goal each from David Wetherall and Gary Speed secured the replay only for United to lose 3-2 at Elland Road, David White and Gordon Strachan bagging the goals for Leeds. In the League though it was a vast 5th place improvement for United with The Whites scoring four or more in a game no less than four times, including a last match 5.0 thrashing away at Swindon, with goals from David White, Chris Fairclough, Rod Wallace and Brian Deane scoring two, this rounded up a reasonable effort in the League. Wilkinson's men finished the campaign on 70 points, winning 18 and scoring 65 goals.

Back Row: Ray Wallace, Jon Newsome, Frank Strandli, David Wetherall, Mark Beeney, John Lukic, Gary McAllister, Brian Deane, Steve Hodge.
Middle Row: Mick Hennigan (Coach), David OíLeary, Noel Whelan, Mark Tinkler, Kevin Sharp, Gary Kelly, David Rocastle, Chris Fairclough, Tony Dorigo, Mel Sterland, Geoff Ladley (Physio).
Front Row: Gary Speed, David Kerslake, David Batty, Howard Wilkinson (Manager), Gordon Strachan, Jamie Forrester, Rod Wallace.

Thanks To: Tony Hill for the original pic and helping with the squad names.

Low Time For Lowfields
An unhappy pic of the old Lowfields Road stand here half way through the stages of demolition. The United sponsor logo (at the time) the Evening Post, partially seen for the last time. The Lowfields stand was demolished in 1992 to make way for the East Stand. The Lowfields Stand was erected in the 1920's and the lower tier terracing ran the entire length of the East side of Elland Road. The seated upper tier with roof stretched over half the distance of the terracing.

Square Smiles
Square Smiles surface pattern here. Loosely based on the Aztec designs of Mexico. Contained in each block is the acronym LUFC with a square smiley badge. Each section brought together in an asymmetrical layout. A cryptic Leeds United design.

Leeds United 1988-89 No.0149
A bad start to the season of 1988-89 saw the end of Billy Bremner as manager of Leeds United. After six League games with only one win United's Chairman Leslie Silver decided to call it a day on the Leeds legend and looked to the First Division for his replacement. Howard Wilkinson who at the time was having a successful go at it with Sheffield Wednesday caught Silver's attentions and he persuaded the manager to join Leeds. This probably proved one of two things, either Silver had the gift of the gab or Leeds United were still a very big pull. Wilkinson went down a Division to manage The Whites and started about the business of getting Leeds back to where they belonged. Into the season and Wilkinson didn't start any fires at Elland Road an exit in the Football League Cup at the hands of Luton Town at the 3rd Round stage, losing 2-0 at Elland Road was followed by an exit from the FA Cup at the 4th Round stage when United lost 2-0 at the City ground to Nottingham Forest. Leeds also lost again to Millwall in the Simod Cup 2-0 at the Den. In the League and steady form delivered a 10th position to the side.

Back Row: Andy Williams, John Pearson, Neil Aspin, Mervyn Day, Mark Aizlewood, Peter Swan, Brendan Ormsby.
Middle Row: Alan Sutton (Physio), John Sheridan, Noel Blake, Peter Haddock, David Rennie, Ronnie Sinclair, Gary Williams, Bob Taylor, Bobby Davison, Mick Hennigan (Coach).
Front Row: Micky Adams, Vince Hilaire, David Batty, Howard Wilkinson (Manager), Glynn Snodin, Ian Baird, John Stiles.
