South To East
Looking at the East Stand here at Elland Road during a break in play, with this one coming from the South Stand. The shot coming from the Football League Championship game against Brighton and Hove Albion at Elland Road on the 3rd August, 2013.

The South Stand at Elland Road was built in 1974 at a cost of 500,000. It replaced the old but popular barrel roofed Scratching Shed and came with state of the art facilities. The South Stand originally had a standing area at the front with a 4,000 capacity and a further 3,500 fans could be seated in the upper tier. The South Stand has 32 executive boxes and in 2006 underwent further developments which included a new facade which boxed in the existing columns and alcoves giving the stand a more modern exterior. Also an overhall of the kitchen concourse area, a new mezzanine level office area, a total modernisation of the corporate facilities above and the Billy's Bar And Brasserie, named after Billy Bremner.

The East Stand at Elland Road was built in 1993 at a cost of 5.5m. It replaced the old Lowfields Road stand which was demolished in 1992. The East Stand runs along the length of the pitch and is the latest stand in the Elland Road family. The stand has 25 executive boxes that are housed between the two tiers. The top tier of the East Stand holds 7,000 fans and the bottom tier has a capacity of 10,000 making the enormous East Stand's capacity 17,000. The East Stand's cantilever stand model is one of the largest cantilever stands in the world. Originally the bottom tier catered for the family stand members that were relocated from the South East corner after the stand was built in 1993. This has since been changed and now either side of the bottom tier is the area for Members Club members and season ticket holders with juveniles. A large concourse runs under the East Stand that contains shops for Leeds United merchandise, fast food, bookies and a restaurant. In March 2011 the first phase of a multi million five phase redevelopment of the stand took place.

Leeds United: Kenny, Peltier, Pearce, Lees, Warnock, Green, Murphy, Tonge, McCormack, Varney, Hunt.
Subs: Poleon for Hunt, Drury for Warnock, Smith for Varney.

Leeds United 1979-80 No.0129
The season of 1979-80 saw Leeds make the lowest finish to the season since they were promoted in 1963-1964. United finished the season in 11th spot winning only 13 games. They also had an embarrassing exit from the FL Cup losing 7-0 away to Arsenal after a 1-1 draw at Elland Road. The FA Cup and again not good for The Whites as the team were out at the first stage losing to Nottingham Forest 4-1 at Elland Road. Europe didn't prove any better for Leeds losing out to Universitatea Craiova by 4-0 on aggregate at the second round stage. The writing was on the wall for manager Armfield, he had won himself a reprieve from the board after he was given a two month ultimatum in November, an improvement in the performances at home allowed the team to avoid relegation but the fans were not so forgiving. The chants loud and clear at Elland Road were a resounding Adamson Out.

Back Row: Keith Parkinson, Paul Hart, John Lukic, Neil Firm, David Harvey, Ray Hankin, Byron Stevenson.
Middle Row: Kevin Hird, Alan Curtis, Gary Hamson, John Hawley, Eddie Gray.
Front Row: Brian Flynn, Paul Madeley, Peter Hampton, Trevor Cherry, Arthur Graham, Carl Harris, Gwyn Thomas.

One Side Of Vinnie Jones
Vinnie Jones here on his pre-match ritual of meeting the disabled supporters and members of LUDO at the North side of the West Stand Elland Road. Vinnie Jones would make a point of doing this before every home game. Notorious for being the bad boy of football this is the one side of Vinnie the football media always leave out. Wilkinson signed Vinne Jones in June 1989 from Wimbledon for 650,000 to bulk up his midfield for United's promo' bid. Jones made 43 apppearances in the league for the Whites in the promotion season of 1989-90 and he made a significant contribution to the push scoring 5 times in the league and never recieving a red card. After United won promotion Wilkinson felt Vinnie had done the job he was bought for and sold him to Sheffield United in September 1990 for 700,000.

Elland Road Snowed Under
A rare view here of the Elland Road pitch under snow. This shot taken from the Lowfields terracing is from 1978 when the Kop still had terracing. The Kop was the last stand at Elland Road to be housed with seating. All clubs in the top two divisions were required to become all-seater after recommendations in the Taylor Report were published in January 1990. The seats were put in the Kop in the close season of 1994.

The Cheese Wrapper
The exterior of South East corner caught in this one from the Elland Road point of view. The shot coming from the Football League Championship game against Barnsley at Elland road on the 6th October, 2012. The South East corner known around Elland Road as the Cheese Wedge because of the yellow seats was once the stand allocated to the visiting supporters. It was decided early in the season of 2011-12 to re-locate the away supporters who visited Elland Road to the south of the West Stand. The area has an allocation of around 3,000 for visitors leaving the entire South Stand and South East corner or the Cheese Wedge for the United supporters. The first game that saw this re-location was the match against Portsmouth on the 1st October, 2011. According to officials at the Club the move proved a success. A new compound for visiting coaches was also used for the first time situated on Fullerton Park adjacent to the new away turnstiles.

Leeds United: Kenny, Peltier, Pearce, Lees, White, Byram, Austin, Brown, Tonge, Diouf, Becchio.

Leeds United 1944-45 No.0056
Football League was suspended with the outbreak of WWII during the 1939-40 season and it couldn't have come at a worse time for Billy Hampson and his young Leeds United side who were just beginning to gel. The Football Association did allow football to continue during the war on a non professional level but there was restrictions on the players wages and games could only go ahead with the permission of the local constabulary. Many clubs closed down for the war but United continued with the assistance of guest players. It was hard for any club who played through the war to rely on players because of conscription and players from other clubs often guested for teams when needed.
In the 1944-45 season United played in the Football League Northern Section and in the team pictured guest players from Barnsley, Chelsea, Sunderland and Celtic are featured. United finished in 32nd place out of a final table made up of 60 teams.

Back Row: Bob Roxburgh (Trainer), Frank Butterworth, Bob Shotton (Barnsley), Jim Twomey, Jack Milburn, Robson Campbell (Charlton Athletic), Sam Weaver (Chelsea).
Front Row: Eddie Burbanks (Sunderland), Cyril Coyne, Gerry Henry, Tom Hindle, John Paton(Celtic).

Thanks to: Tony Hill for putting the names and teams to the faces.

Leeds United 1982-83 No.0136
For the season 1982-83 Leeds United found themselves back in the Second Division and it was another hero from the Revie era Eddie Gray that took up the reigns as player-manager of United after the dismissal of Allan Clarke. Gray had an unenviable task ahead, crowds were down at Elland Road to an all time low and the club reported a debt of 1.5M pounds. Gray's side just about held their own in the League without ever threatening while the side exited early in both domestic Cup competetion's. After a thrilling 4-2 win away against Newcastle United in the first stage of the League Cup, where Leeds came back from 0-2 down, United sadly lost the next round at home to Huddersfield Town 1-0. In the FA Cup and Leeds eventually lost a marathon 4th Round tie against Arsenal at Highbury after two replay's. United finished eighth in Division Two on 60 points.

Back Row Mark Gavin, Martin Dickinson, Neil Aspin, John Lukic, Paul Hart, David Harvey, Gary Hamson, John Donnelly, Kevin Hird.
Front Row Gwyn Thomas, Aidan Butterworth, John Sheridan, Andy Ritchie, Eddie Gray (Player-Manager), Tommy Wright, Arthur Graham, Frank Gray.

It'll Grow Back
The Elland Road pitch here undergoing its annual makeover. Every year the turf is taken up and re-laid during the close season. Work started on the hallowed turf in mid March with groundsmen working round the clock to ensure the pitch will be ready for the new season. Norman Southernwood head groundsman told the official site, "After the last game of the season we had about a fortnight where there were several activities on the pitch, such as seven-a-side games. "Then last Thursday the top came off, on Friday it was power harrowed before we tried to get it levelled on Saturday. Since the start of the week we've been working on the edges of the pitch, as you can't work on the entire pitch with machinery. "Everything's looking alright at the moment. The weather's just gone in our favour now because the sun's come out and that warms up the ground and helps to kick on the seed. Usually within ten days after re-seeding everything's looking a bit greener."
