Leeds United 1988-89 No.0149
A bad start to the season of 1988-89 saw the end of Billy Bremner as manager of Leeds United. After six League games with only one win United's Chairman Leslie Silver decided to call it a day on the Leeds legend and looked to the First Division for his replacement. Howard Wilkinson who at the time was having a successful go at it with Sheffield Wednesday caught Silver's attentions and he persuaded the manager to join Leeds. This probably proved one of two things, either Silver had the gift of the gab or Leeds United were still a very big pull. Wilkinson went down a Division to manage The Whites and started about the business of getting Leeds back to where they belonged. Into the season and Wilkinson didn't start any fires at Elland Road an exit in the Football League Cup at the hands of Luton Town at the 3rd Round stage, losing 2-0 at Elland Road was followed by an exit from the FA Cup at the 4th Round stage when United lost 2-0 at the City ground to Nottingham Forest. Leeds also lost again to Millwall in the Simod Cup 2-0 at the Den. In the League and steady form delivered a 10th position to the side.
